Video Evidence and Analysis in Special Needs Schools

Template for tagging Intensive Interaction sessions developed by Exeter House.

This is the home page for the Gesture Based Technology Professional Learning Community project on video analysis running 2014-2016.

Our most recent meeting was on the 10th March at Exeter House Special School, Salisbury. We all trained in the video analysis Codimg software with Analysis Pro to really start the PLC's work.

Our next meeting in May will be used to view the video evidence that members have analysed and further refine the systems used.

For a record of our first meeting click here. The meeting was the 16th October at Trinity Fields School.

What is video analysis?

Video analysis is a methodology mainly used in sports. When you watch a rugby or football match and they tell you how many passes, tackles or metres have been ran they are using video analysis tools- they are basically 'tagging' the video to get data from it. You can do this either in real time as the event is happening, or afterwards. It gives you a data set.

How is it used in special education?

The main work has been done by Andrew Walker at Exeter House School- the blog of the project is here. It enables you to look at the improvements the pupil has made over time and give you data on this at the end of it. It has so far been used in Intensive Interaction sessions with pupils with severe learning difficulties and a start has been made on using it to measure and gauge general engagement patterns.

How do we start?

Get involved with the PLC! If you haven't been to the 10th March 2015 meeting and had the training you will have to catch up but often we have more informal sessions where we discuss the use of new technology and have guest speakers in.
